Happy (Belated) Mother’s Day!

Should we make a big deal about “just” saying Happy Mother’s Day on the day, but not doing all the big celebratory activities every time? Maybe.

Mother’s Day was a mix of conventional and unconventional for many this year. This can remind us that we are not locked in to a specific holiday to celebrate.  We can do it any time that the demonstration of love is needed or desired. Just showing someone that you saw and remembered love that was shown…demonstrated to you or to someone else…WOW! That can be a game changer for someone who may otherwise feel unvalued.

We challenge you/us to celebrate the Mothering Spirit’s merciful demonstrations of love.  That grace can nearly mend a wound and certainly brighten a day.
There are 5 weeks between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.  Let’s see if we can get at least 35 stories of  The Mothering Spirit‘s Merciful Demonstrations of Love.
In The Chaplin Family, we share that The Mothering Spirit‘s Merciful Demonstrations of Love are inspired by God’s Love.  In this picture (circa 1989), Diamond and Mom led an effort to do some groundskeeping work that was needed at Bartow Elementary (now Brock Elementary) in the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System.  I am fairly sure that Mom, like many of us, had many things to do, but showing support and love to us kids always rose to the top of that list…even when we were (much) less than worthy of that sacrifice.
So, throwing down the gauntlet…
From today, 13 MAY 2024, to 15 JUN 2024, load us up with your stories and we’ll do the counting. The goal is at least 35 stories, past, recent, or hot off the present press that tell or show The Mothering Spirit‘s Merciful Demonstrations of Love.  If you have a picture, post it, if that is allowed by those who are in it.  We really look forward to hearing from you.
Let’s do this…
Celebrate Mother’s
and those who mother us
every day,
including the 2nd Sunday in May!

Happy Birthday, Diamond!

In honor of the day that would have been Diamond’s 44th birthday, we released

The Oscar Chaplin, III Foundation for Education & Athletics 2024-2025 Level-Up Awards

You may access the application here.

If you ever saw Oscar a.k.a. Diamond at a competition, you were quite likely to see his (our) father, Big “O,” not too far behind.  Big O provided spiritual, mental, and physical support to Diamond and anyone else at the competition…or in close, or not-so-close proximity, especially if they were feeling pain. This snippet of a backstory is to provide a tiny bit of context for you as you consider your nomination.

What does a student, an athlete, and especially a student-athlete, need these days to be successful for getting to the next level?

  • Parent/Guardian travel and/or housing support, especially in the case of minor-aged athletes on travel teams?
  • Money for membership fees for a promising athlete in-need, who will benefit from being on a pay-to-play team?
  • Money for learning support materials for a star student who has fallen on tough times or whose family finances are already tight?
  • Funds for tutoring a student-athlete at odd hours when on competition travel?
  • Money for gear?

Please tell us what your needs are! These awards will provide support for Diamonds-In-The-Rough and diamonds having a rough time so that they may level-up in their achievement.

Please be considerate in your request and do your best to keep requests below $1,000, requests above $1,000 should be very well-justified.  If you are only in need of support to cover fuel costs to a regional day competition to provide parental support, that is just as fund-able and important as providing support for any larger request. We anticipate being able to award approximately $5,000 total in awards for the 2024-2025 cycle and we want to be able to provide as many awards as possible.  Funds that you request must be spent by 29 February 2025.

Applications can be submitted by the recipient or on behalf of the recipient. Please provide your best complete responses for the information below. Note that there is a recommendation letter required, so ask your recommender as early as you can.

Preview the questions here.

Deadline for submission of all elements (application, budget, and recommendation letter) is midnight Pacific on March 22nd, 2024.  East Coast folks, that means 03:00/3:00 a.m. on March 23rd.

Please email Jim Chaplin or Sue Ebanks at TheOC3Foundation@gmail.com with any questions that you may have.  You may also visit us on Facebook or on our website for information on The Foundation.

The Oscar Chaplin, III Foundation for Education & Athletics, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization that is supported and funded through the efforts and gifts of our Partners and Contributors. Thank you!

Just because…

Just because you do not recently see posts from us does not mean we are not here…

For you can rest assured that we are here and you are in our prayers, especially during this time of year when we memorialize those who gave the ultimate sacrifice so that we may have the freedom to do what we do.

The Level-Up Awards Showcase Is Coming

Athletes…Athletes…Athletes!

If you ever saw Diamond at a competition, you didn’t have to look too far to see Big O (a.k.a. Dad).

Whether Dad had major things that he needed to do at work or if the family finances were tight, he was always there. Whether it was foreign or domestic, he was always there. He was there, number one for Diamond, but for others, too…and then for Diamond’s athletes in the later years. That kind of support is priceless. One must also recognize that for Big O to be able to do that, Mom had to provide full support back at headquarters!

As we think about the athletes that are soaring to the highest heights or are on the pathway to soar to the highest heights, we want to support those athletes in any way that works to bless them in a special way. Often that means supporting the family to have a representative with that athlete.

This month, through 31 OCT 2022, we want to hear what you would like to see in an athletic award and athletic support. We are in the brainstorming phase and anticipate announcing the opening of both The Mind (See last month’s call out for education support ideas…still time to respond!) and The Body support awards by the end of November.

So let’s talk The Body this month, specifically ways that The Foundation can support the advancement of our athletes! Chime in! Our ears are open!

You can respond in the comment box on the website, on the Facebook page, or of course you can reach out to us at:

TheOC3Foundation@gmail.com

As always, be blessed in spirit, mind, and body!

Education: Reminder of Request for Input

A new school year has begun for most and will soon begin for everyone else. So, we are planning to push for a first scholarship offering this coming year and want to know where the needs are.

If you have ideas for scholarships that will meet specific needs that our students and student-athletes have, post a comment and/or email us…keep the ideas coming!

We plan to announce the opening of the request for applications before Thanksgiving, so we want to get information on the needs for an Education Scholarship by 30 SEP 2022. A request for ideas for an Athletics Award will be coming in October.🙂

Let’s be creative! Thinking outside the box (and even throwing away the box) is in the spirit of this Foundation.

Remember that we can be reached via email at

Diamond in the Rough

Most times the phrase diamond in the rough refers to an unpolished beginning stage of something or someone. When I think diamond in the rough, I think an immovable force, a strong-willed gladiator, a coach, a friend, a brother, a cornerstone, a CHAPLIN! This one picture sums up and unspeakable Bond. I’m so proud to continue carrying on his memory and legacy through The OC3 Foundation with my family. Stay tuned and keep looking out for all the amazing works that will be coming soon. Also, a huge thank you to Ashley McGahee for making this picture and so much more possible. We are so happy and proud to be surrounded by so many amazing people that are willing and desire to help the mission! To God be the Glory!
